When Plainsay makes sense

For messages, emails, notes, and other text fields, Plainsay offers a focused workflow: press your dictation key, speak, and finish recording. Local speech runs on your Mac after downloading a model. History and vocabulary are included, and the Mac client is free and MIT-licensed.

When MacWhisper may suit you better

If your task begins with an existing recording or a set of files, look at MacWhisper. Its site describes a broader transcription feature set. Plainsay’s released Mac app does not import those files. MacWhisper features

Use the free options before paying

Test a normal writing task in each app. For Plainsay, choose Local mode and leave Polishing off to start. Add an editing provider only if you need it. Neither a Cloud subscription nor an API key is required for Plainsay’s local dictation.

Questions before switching

Can Plainsay replace MacWhisper for interviews?

Not for importing recorded interviews. The released Plainsay Mac app is a dictation tool, not a file-transcription workflow.

Is MacWhisper subscription-only?

No. Its site lists a free edition and a one-time Pro license. See current MacWhisper pricing.

Try it with your own words

Download Plainsay for an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later. Choose Local during setup, download a speech model, and dictate a few sentences in your normal apps. Review names, punctuation, and insertion behavior. No payment card or Cloud subscription is needed.
